We're hearing it again ... the number of applications for open positions is rising.

But the number of qualified applicants for those roles has stayed the same or dropped.

What is a recruiter to do?

Work their network and proactively source qualified candidates to interview for the role.

While optimizing online profiles can help clients show up in these recruiter's searches, there is so much more they can do to turn the tables in their favor!

If you are coaching clients to use social media and other digital tools (articles, speaking engagements, etc.) to build their brand, they will rise quickly to the top of searches and be the sought-out expert in their field.

Here are a few questions to ask them...

What do they want to be known for? I recently had someone ask in a presentation, "how do you distinguish yourself from others with the same name?" Consistency! When your message consistently communicates who you are professionally and what you want to be known for, it will be obvious immediately to people that they've found the right "Susan Smith" or not.

Who needs to know you and where are they already engaged in a community? It isn't who you know today, it's who knows you. The best way to become know, especially in a new professional community, is to find existing communities, ask questions, and add value without self-promotion.

What conversations do they want to engage in with this audience? What topics are they interested in that also interest their audience? How can they demonstrate the expertise they want to be known for? When they are focused in on the topics that matter they can build a cohesive digital brand.
