It may surprise you to learn that one of my first jobs on campus was in Accounting. I'd been driving an hour each way (sometimes three with traffic) to a job, so when a job on my local campus called, I jumped at it. I became an accounting assistant in a department with 10 students and my office was in a closet. Needless to say, I kept looking. The role I landed next would be the pivot point in my career -- giving me access to advising students and developing programs.
And networking would be the tool to get me there.

True to the real "hidden job market," the role *was* posted. But it was posted as a transfer opening, and I only found out about it because someone I knew (my boyfriend, now husband) told me. He had shared with his advisor that I was miserable and she said I should apply ... the job closed that day. I got an interview and the job, setting the course for where I am today. Because of networking!

As an introvert, I always cringe when people talked about networking as going to big events or cold calling.
Yes, networking can be those things. But it doesn't have to be. When I had the opportunity and the knowledge to start putting together a job search program, it was important to me that people learn all the ways they could network -- and that starting with people they already know, like, and trust them has value! This was the premise of the job search course I taught at our local workforce center at the beginning of my career and the basis for the Certified Hidden Job Market Coach program CTL's been offering since 2015.
