“When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.” – Henry Ford, American industrialist and business magnate

As the job market shifts, we career services providers must adjust our messaging to address the needs of our clients today.

For career pros in organizations, thinking about specific challenges clients face now to revamp our programs and messaging will increase participation and encourage clients to engage in what we know will help them achieve their goals.

If we are run a business, making these shifts in marketing and programming is critical to our bottom line and our client's success.

Here are a few shifts I'm seeing in the market today and what they mean for us:

1. Job seekers are seeing longer, more dispersed hiring processes. Instead of  5 people from the team getting together for the interview, candidates are meeting with each individual. This makes sense in some ways, considering the challenges of group Zoom conversations, and it means job seekers must prepare to excel in one-on-one conversations and to persevere in the process.

2. Speaking of Zoom conversations, our board discussed yesterday how those who are currently employed (a much larger segment of our market today than a year ago) are concerned about how they come across in Zoom meetings. As virtual work persists, they've moved past worrying about the basics of Zoom to realizing they're missing out on opportunities to connect in task-focused meetings and anxious about the long-term impact on their career.

3. Job seekers and leaders are seeing the effects of nearly $10 billion in investments pouring into HR tech. From increases in pre-employment assessments, AI digital sourcing tools, video interviews, and employee relations / culture assessment tools, these are poised to rapidly change how our clients interact with their employers from the initial application through interviewing, internal leadership/skill development, and advancement.

4. What our board is calling an "employee-driven" workplace that is demanding shifts in working practices toward flexibility, in leadership styles toward inclusion, in employer priorities toward mental health and balance, and much more. These culture shifts can be hard for job seekers to navigate in research companies and during interviews. They are critical concepts for leaders to understand as they interview for new roles or seek promotions.

Many of you have been engaging in discussions with us around remote work, inclusive leadership practices, coaching for wellbeing, and many other topics for years (if you've missed these discussions, check out the white papers from the 2019, 2020, and 2021).

You have been part of helping us achieve our mission of keeping you on top of the trends so you can provide the best information for your job seekers. Thank you! Mark November 16-19, 2021, on your calendars as we plan for the next Career Jam to talk about trends for 2022.

What other trends are you seeing that we can help you and your clients navigate?
