True confessions…
My first mentor as a resume writer told me, “Resume writing isn’t for everyone.”
As someone who considered themselves a good writer and received high grades on writing assignments in high school and college, this was quite the blow.
Once I was over the shock and initial denial, I realized that resume writing was going to take work to learn even though I was a good writer. |

Have you ever gotten feedback that you weren’t expecting? The “even though” phrase can be helpful in coaching ourselves and our clients back into that growth mindset. It acknowledges that we have skills AND we have room to grow.
Now, this wasn’t an overnight mindset shift, and for a while I was driven (a little unhealthily) by the desire to prove this mentor wrong.
The first step? A day-long training with the co-founder of Resume Writing Academy, Louise Kursmark.
After getting an introduction to the specific tools and strategies for resume writers, I started a little love affair with resumes.
I love how the process of creating a resume clarifies focus, connects a client to their accomplishments, and results in a renewed confidence.
How it goes so much deeper than written words on paper – whether you write the resume for the client or coach them through the process.
I reveled in using the strategies from Louise to help students graduating from the university and community college programs I worked in, the late-career reinventors that came to the nonprofit where I worked, and the justice-involved population at the local halfway house.
Little did I know that meeting Louise that day would be the start to a relationship that, nearly 10 years later, would result in the opportunity to take a leadership role at Resume Writing Academy.
The best part? Now I get to offer the transformational opportunity that launched my resume writing career to others through the Academy Certified Resume Writer program.
