"What good is the warmth of summer without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?" – John Steinbeck, writer, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature

It only took a few months networking to build my careers practice for someone to ask the zinger question...

"How are you different than Sue?"

You see "Sue" was the other career professional in town. In fact, she had been my mentor. And she was good.

And, after a bit of an identity crises, I had realized that I wasn't her. That trying to be her wasn't going to work for me or my clients.

I had struck out on my own, knowing that my difference could add value. But I wasn't quite sure what that looked like, let alone how to answer "How are you different?"!

What came out that night wasn't bad ... I worked on my own with clients and Sue had a team, so I tried to talk to the value of that.

But I know it sounded defensive and didn't really communicate my value.

It was a wake-up call that I needed to know and be confident in my unique promise of value (aka my personal brand).

One difference was my why. Our motivators are almost always unique.

What I did was different, even though we were both offering career services as I really love walking people through the process from who they are to getting the job (and now building classes to help you do any part of that process!).

How I do what I do was different. How could I speak to that? What was the value to my target audience?

Many of our clients are currently reevaluating their career and life. You might be doing the same.

What do you want your business or career to look like moving forward? Are you shifting your services? Your target audience?

I'd love to hear how you're evolving!
