It turns out that I have a special skill for finding the most expensive way to get from the airport to a hotel for a professional conference.
Whether it’s taking the “taxi” that is really a private driver (how are they such good liars!?) or thinking that taxis have been cheaper than Lyft in some cities, so I’ll just do that … only to get a bill for nearly double the price when I arrive.
Do you have a “special skill”? Hit reply and tell me! I’d love to know I’m not the only one.
This past week I was in Anaheim at the National Career Development Association conference presenting to our colleagues on the new technologies in hiring and job search.
Helping candidates show up in a recruiter's online search through an optimized profile is important, and there are new tools we can use to guide this process. I’ll be covering a few of those in my live stream this Tuesday!

For those who want the job, not a job, a more proactive approach to using social media for job search is needed.
They are in luck! Social media has created so many opportunities for us and our clients to research, connect, and engage in the communities that can lead to an ideal employer (for any level, role, or industry around the globe).
The trick is understanding how you can use the tools and keeping an open mind to find the best tool for connecting with the desired community.
Here are a few strategies for using these tools proactively:
- LinkedIn: Go beyond optimizing your profile to identify active people in your desired industry, systematically engage to build a community, and have consistency.
- Twitter: Research companies and see who is active, who is posting jobs, and what topics they are posting about so you can find and engage with people in the field.
- Facebook: Research and join groups where you can network with the people in your field.
Here's a downloadable checklist you can use to help them determine which social media tools are most important.
And here's a video on strategies to search Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter to uncover these hidden gems.
If you want the full suite of checklists, worksheets, and scripts to help clients search using social media tools, join us for our new Social Media for Job Search Strategist program that starts July 13!

Recruiters are diversifying the social media tools they use to find candidates. Are your coaching tools keeping up?
According to the latest Jobvite study, recruiters are increasingly using Facebook, Instagram, and even TikTok to find job seekers. If our clients are only focused on getting found on LinkedIn, they are missing out on opportunities to connect with their target companies. Of course, LinkedIn is a powerful tool for job seekers. But optimizing a profile is just the start. They don't want to sit around waiting to get found! Help them use LinkedIn and other social tools to make connections and become known so they are the referred candidate for their ideal jobs.
In 4 weeks, this program will give you strategies most coaches aren't using to help job seekers get hired faster by identifying the channels where they can engage with target companies and using processes, scripts, and other tools to execute their search.
Classes will be recorded and students will have lifetime access to recordings.
Week 1: Strategy & LinkedIn (July 13, 2:00-3:30 ET)
- Clarifying Job Search Focus
- Evaluating Social Platforms for Use in Search
- Using Advanced LinkedIn Search Techniques for Job Search
- Optimizing LinkedIn, Facebook, IG & Twitter Profiles ** NOTE: This is not a writing class. We will focus on more proactive search strategies while touching on profile optimization (and giving you a checklist to optimize it!)
Week 2: LinkedIn & Twitter (July 20, 2:00-3:30 ET)
- Maximizing LinkedIn's Jobs Feature
- Using a Relationship-Building System
- Employing Hashtag Strategies for Research
- Maximizing Scripts for Connecting
