“Joy is the most enduring cosmetic.” – Chip Conley, American hospitality entrepreneur, author, and speaker
|
|
|
During my final year in college, I had the opportunity to take a professional role within the recreation department on campus. It included mentoring and advising student leaders (some of whom were older than me at the time) and running programs typically run by professional staff even though I was 20. In an effort to help me gain the respect I needed to do the role, my amazing boss at the time gave me this advice: "Don't smile too much. People won't take you seriously."
She wanted to help me succeed in the university environment which, although mainly populated by women on staff, was dominated by traditional male leadership culture and definition of professionalism.

|
|
This experience helps me remember that many clients have heard similar messages. That they might be confused when we talk about the importance of empathy or the benefits of smiling (especially during virtual interviews!). I am reminded to let the client lead this discussion as we co-discover how they want to show up while sharing insights of how leadership culture has changed to value empathy (at least in the U.S.) and how important visual cues are to create engagement in virtual settings. This is why we do interview coaching! The "how-to" articles our clients read online give them great advice but many of them need guidance to sort through that advice, determine what applies to them, and practice implementing it in a safe space.
It's hard to believe that it's been 14 years since I launched my side hustle and began blazing a path away from the university. In the speaking, training, and coaching I've done since then, one piece of feedback is always consistent -- the welcoming atmosphere attendees enjoy, created by a simple smile that thankfully I wasn't able to change. What other career advice was true in the past that has shifted in recent years? I'd love to hear what expectations you're helping clients redefine!

MAY 18 | Prepare Clients for Today’s Interviews: Tools for Virtual Interviews, Email Salary Negotiation, and More
|
|
Interviewing changed forever in 2020, and for a while it was OK
that clients didn't have a professional background, fumbled around a bit on
Zoom, and may not have had a great presence on video.
But according to the latest Jobvite data, virtual interviews are
here to stay and our clients need to polish up their performance to engage in
meaningful conversations with employers, demonstrate their virtual work skills,
and compete for the jobs they really want.
We've taken our tried-and-true interview preparation materials and
given them a modern-day upgrade, freshened up the arsenal of tools clients
need, and are ready to share them with you to use with your clients!
After this session you will walk away with:
- Coaching questions to
help a client identify their challenges and style
- Research and resources
on virtual communication that any client can use to improve their video
presence
- Checklists and
resources to help them prepare for the interview so they are more
comfortable and stand out from the crowd (most of whom still fail to do
the research!)
- A virtual interview
feedback process, checklist, and feedback grid so you can provide
meaningful feedback for every client after a mock interview
- Research, resources,
scripts, and coaching questions for helping clients navigate new
challenges like negotiating remote/hybrid work, email salary negotiation,
and location-based salary
Registration includes access to the live
session on May 18, from 4:00-5:30 pm ET AND the recording to
watch any time you'd like.
