“Creativity doesn't wait for the perfect moment. It fashions its own perfect moments out of ordinary ones” – Bruce Garrbrandt, Artist, Author, Speaker
|
|
|
It only takes one yes! This is something we often tell job seekers: it only takes one company to present you with an employment offer to end your search. But how do they know if that offer is good enough? How do they know if they should wait for something better? Two weeks ago we put our house on the market at a time when many are getting multiple offers in less than a few days (sometimes within hours!).
I fully anticipated being back in our house by the following Monday with an offer in hand.
|
|
|
Instead, the boys and I spent the week out of the house hoping for more showings. And on Sunday morning, 10 days after listing, received an offer. If we bring a bit of perspective to this issue, prior to 2019 getting a full-price offer on a house in 10 days would have been outstanding.
But now that "everyone else" is getting offers quickly and many going over asking, it can be tempting to feel disappointed. Instead of comparing the offer to an external perspective, we looked at our priorities. And we considered the uncertainty of the future. Will houses continue to go quickly and over asking much longer?
A similar transition is happening right now in many ways for job seekers.
Although it is a job seekers market in many industries and geographies, the same is not true in others (like the mortgage industry, which is seeing significant layoffs in the U.S.). Some companies may offer larger salaries that match what our clients hear others being offered, but fewer benefits or poor company culture.
This is why coaching is so powerful. It helps people get clear in their values. Put comparisons and research in their place. Weigh the pros and cons. The "how-to" of job search, interviewing, and negotiation are important. And at the end of the day, coaching is really about helping people get into the right mindset to take the actions that work for them -- boldly and without regret. I'll leave you today with one of my favorite quotes: "Comparison is the thief of joy" (Theodore Roosevelt). I prefer it to Twain's "Comparison is the death of joy," as with reflection we can put that comparison in it's place and be joyful!
How do you move yourself and your clients past the temptation of comparison?

MAY 18 | Prepare Clients for Today’s Interviews: Tools for Virtual Interviews, Email Salary Negotiation, and More
|
|
Interviewing changed forever in 2020, and for a while it was OK
that clients didn't have a professional background, fumbled around a bit on
Zoom, and may not have had a great presence on video.
But according to the latest Jobvite data, virtual interviews are
here to stay and our clients need to polish up their performance to engage in
meaningful conversations with employers, demonstrate their virtual work skills,
and compete for the jobs they really want.
We've taken our tried-and-true interview preparation materials and
given them a modern-day upgrade, freshened up the arsenal of tools clients
need, and are ready to share them with you to use with your clients!
After this session you will walk away with:
- Coaching questions to
help a client identify their challenges and style
- Research and resources
on virtual communication that any client can use to improve their video
presence
- Checklists and
resources to help them prepare for the interview so they are more
comfortable and stand out from the crowd (most of whom still fail to do
the research!)
- A virtual interview
feedback process, checklist, and feedback grid so you can provide
meaningful feedback for every client after a mock interview
- Research, resources,
scripts, and coaching questions for helping clients navigate new
challenges like negotiating remote/hybrid work, email salary negotiation,
and location-based salary
Registration includes access to the live
session on May 18, from 4:00-5:30 pm ET AND the recording to
watch any time you'd like.
