“Stop and look up. Ask yourself, is this the mountain I wish to climb?” – Calm App Reflection
In case no one has told you recently, you're marvelous. Truly. You give your energy - daily - to helping others. To learning and staying up on all the trends, noise, and more in the careers industry. And, no matter the setting where you work, you go above and beyond to deliver value to your clients. My sister called today, and we were talking about her interaction with another parent. As we were talking about the increase in negative communication patterns, she shared a story.
Her kids heard a new ad on the radio from a fast-food chain promoting that their fries are better than the "limp" fries of a competitor.
There might be an official name for it, but I'm going to call it "tear-down marketing." Where a company or individual tries to improve their position by tearing down the competition. The problem? It feels yucky. In fact, without any prompting from my sister, her kids (5-11) remarked on how mean the commercial was. Does this type of marketing work? Perhaps. But kids often show us a raw reaction most adults have but don't show. Their reaction to the ad suggests this marketing tactic likely doesn't work. That it creates a negative impression of the brand that is throwing shade.
Unfortunately, tear-down marketing techniques seem to be infiltrating the careers space. This is not the norm for a colleague group who has historically supported each other, understanding that bringing credibility to the space is nearly impossible when we're fighting amongst ourselves. Does this mean we always agree? Of course not. And we seek to understand. Educate tactfully. Disagree respectfully. Demonstrate our coaching skills and the communication skills we would want our clients to use in the workplace. When the haters come, as we know they will, we learn what we can and remember (although it's much more challenging to do than say), that valuable feedback comes from people who want to help you improve, not those that are out to tear you down.
And, if you're into that sort of thing, go for a walk or a run and blast a little Calm Down from Taylor Swift ... and then get back to the important work you do because your clients need your brilliance!
