We all want the world to be a kinder, less biased, less violent place – for our children, grandchildren, nieces, or nephews, for our clients, and ourselves.
How do we get there? If you've been reading or listening to helpful content in this area, please reply and let me know what you've found. We had compiled a list nearly a year ago when George Floyd's murder brought pointed attention to these issues, and we need them just as much today – if not more.

Racial inequities are joined by unemployment bias, age bias, and motherhood bias as groups of individuals face additional challenges in getting back to work. As career services providers, being mindful of these
biases' sociological and measurable impact on the hiring process is essential.
Having frank conversations with our clients about how bias may impact their search
can be challenging to navigate, and yet we can't avoid them.
There is a balance we strike between walking clients
through understanding and not feeding into the bias and helping them own and be
confident in who they are as a person and a professional.
The latest buzz on these topics is LinkedIn adding "At-Home
Parent" to the drop-down menu of job title options. The effort to reduce
the bias is commendable, and yet the candidate is put in the position of
taking the risk that bias will not impact their job opportunities.
If you are interested in the data behind this bias and
other considerations as you advise clients on their LinkedIn profile and resume,
check out the latest video in our CTL Facebook group (open to all career service
providers).
You can share your thoughts in the comments there and
join in the conversation with colleagues (comments in the group are only visible
to group members).
We will also be having a conversation about dealing with
challenging situations on resumes and profiles (returning from a gap, incarceration,
military transition, and more) in two weeks. If you have specific challenges
you'd like us to address, let me know!
I look forward to hearing about any
other resources you are enjoying on the topic of bias. If you've listened to excellent
speakers with expertise in this area, please forward them the Call for
Proposals for the 2022 Symposium in Philadelphia (or connect them to me
directly!).Marie Zimenoff

APR 26 | Learn to Help Clients Through Federal Job Applications & Earn the ACRW-Federal
|
In this certification and training program, you will learn how to help clients access an opportunity to serve their country while gaining employment with strong benefits, stability, and a reliable schedule.
Helping a client apply for a position with the federal government is much different than applying for a position in the private sector. Most federal positions are posted on USAJOBS (USAJOBS.gov) and most postings require that applicants apply through the system. It is important that federal resume writers understand how the system works so they can properly advise their clients.
This program, developed and taught by former federal HR professional Nancy Segal, will take you step-by-step through the federal application and resume development process.
