“The marvelous thing about a good question is that it shapes our identity as much by the asking as it does by answering.” – David Whyte, Anglo-Irish poet
|
|
|
There's a lot going on right now around the world.
Our clients have a lot going on in their lives and uncertainty weighing on their minds. We have a lot going on, too, and aren't immune to the impacts of stressful events at home and abroad.
I'm hearing from many career colleagues that they are having more challenging engagements with clients and students.
Last-minute cancellations. No-shows. Frustration. More difficulty making decisions and feeling confident with their career direction.
|
|
|
How do you deal with this in your work with clients and business operations?
I'll shared these three tips and a few more in my live stream a few weeks ago:
1 - Set your boundaries. Have a clear process. Automate follow-up and other communications so you make sure what's going on in your life doesn't get in the way of being the best you can be.
Have clauses in your contracts for missing appointments and timelines for people getting back to you on their edits/deliverables. If you work with non-paying clients, have language that requests they cancel within a certain timeframe and automated reminders to reduce no-shows.
2 - Be kind while communicating boundaries. We are going to give people the flexibility they need, and we want to communicate our boundaries while doing that.
"It sounds like you are going through a lot right now. While I usually require edits within one week, I'm happy to give you more time. What seems reasonable for you?"
3 - Pick up the phone or use video/voice recordings. Email is likely to be misread. If you sense frustration or other emotions in people's communication, pick up the phone.
Follow up with an email so they can better remember the outcome of the call. If they call and leave a voice mail, call back in addition to sending an email.
And, if you haven't seen it, check out this article in Forbes on donating to the humanitarian efforts for Ukraine.
Amidst all this uncertainty, you are there -- working with people who are stuck, feeling lost, or struggling. Please take care of yourself and let us know how we can support you.

APR 11 | CTL Annual Symposium - March 22 Is the Last Day to Save
|
Join us for 3 days – in person – to learn, connect, and get to know other leaders in the career services industry!
The CTL leadership team is known for putting together a leading-edge curriculum for all our events, and the annual professional development symposium always brings the best minds together for you to learn from.
Do you want to get the latest information, but hate when you feel like you didn't apply anything you learned? Us, too!
Even before it was cool, we were creating unique spaces for professionals to share their expertise. We know adults learn by sharing, questioning, and integrating information. We work with our presenters to make sure each presentation gives you not only the latest information but time and space to share, integrate, and make that information actionable.
Will it be recorded or simulcasted? Not this event...
While we do extensive virtual training throughout the year (for 15+ years running), we also know the power of focus that comes with attending a live, in-person event. That is why we are so excited to bring this back...safely! Please see our COVID protocols (and city of Philadelphia mandates) here.
Can't attend live last minute? Don't worry. We have options ready to go for you to get the value from your investment.
Here's a little taste of what you can expect from our presenter Brandon Mitchell.

Job Search: LinkedIn Adds New ‘Future of Skills’ Data Tool to Highlight Key Industry Trends (Social Media Today) This article walks you through a new feature of LinkedIn that shows how the skills for certain jobs have changed over the years. This is good data to share with clients – especially those who have been in the same role for many years. I still prefer LinkedIn Explorer to see the keywords to include in LinkedIn profiles and resumes as it is a bit cleaner for the client to understand.

Resumes: Many Companies and Recruiters Are Getting Rid of Resumes (Fortune)
If you read between the lines in this article, you can see that employers are using more application questions and LinkedIn profile reviews (which they admit is not that different from a resume). You are likely helping clients with LinkedIn profiles, but how are you helping job seekers craft answers to questions asked on applications?
