"Knowledge is like underwear. It is useful to have it, but not necessary to show it off." - Bill Murray, American actor

How did a blueberry pancake and mashed potato “popsicle” make it into my newsletter this month?

This week, my son decided he wanted to make a recipe out of the kids’ cookbook (he’s 4). The recipe was for a biscuit with chunks of cheese in it that look like a paw print – on a popsicle stick. But he had his heart set on a pancake with mashed potatoes on it.

After several confirmations, I acquiesced and started the mashed potatoes.

All we had were blueberry pancakes… but the paw print design on top (with the potatoes) was quite good, in my humble opinion.

Anyway … he ate the whole thing. And he’s never eaten mashed potatoes before!

WHY? Because it was his idea!

Have you seen the same behavior in your family, yourself, your clients? What have your clients done that worked (maybe even when you didn’t think it would) because it was their idea?

As coaches and educators, we can often get caught up in the knowledge we have … about the job search process, leadership competencies, resume trends, etc.

But when it comes right down to it, our students or clients will be much more likely to change their behavior, remember the content, or try that new idea if it is their idea.

This is a fine dance. We do have best practices to share. And it proves the power of coaching: helping clients integrate their new information and form their own ideas about how to implement it.

How are you doing this within your practice? Are there places you could take the instruction or consulting out of your sessions to focus more on coaching the client?

If you’d like some ideas and resources for doing that, check out our coach training programs. Each one provides tools, sparks creation of processes, and strengthens your coaching ... so your clients move from knowing to doing (their way)!

This is also why we’ve always included colleague discussion opportunities at CTL’s professional development symposium. As a learner, it gives you the opportunity to cement your knowledge by sharing your own perspective and, of course, enriches relationships in our community.

We can’t wait to see so many of you at the Symposium starting next week (did I mention regular registration CLOSES TOMORROW!)?

LinkedIn revealed in 2019 that recruiters are 13% less likely to click on a woman’s LinkedIn profile if she appeared in search results. But this same data also revealed women apply to 20% fewer jobs than men.

Gender bias in hiring is a real problem. That’s why the theme of this year’s #InternationalWomensDay is #ChoosetoChallenge. But how can women job seekers fight this bias and reclaim control of their job search?

I’m looking forward to discussing this topic with Kamara Toffolo this week on #OfficeHours.

On Thursday, March 11 at 8pm EST, I’ll be joining Kamara and will offer my insights, tips, and advice for effective job search strategies and tactics that will enable women to feel empowered in their job search, covering questions including:

How can women challenge and address the obstacles they face in job searching?

What is motherhood bias? How does it impact our job search? How do we combat it?

How can women best navigate a career transition after a layoff?

We’ll also be taking your job search questions!
