I had only been out on my own in my business a few months when someone asked the zinger question...
"How are you different than Sue?"
You see "Sue" was the other career services professional in town. In fact, she had been my mentor. And she was good.
And, after a bit of an identity crisis, I had realized that I wasn't her. That trying to be her wasn't going to work for me or my clients.
I had struck out on my own, knowing that my difference could add value, but not quite sure what that looked like, let alone how to answer that question!
What came out that night wasn't bad ... I worked on my own with clients and Sue had a team, so I tried to speak to how that added value.

But I know it sounded defensive and didn't really communicate my value.
It was a wake-up call that I needed to know and be confident articulating my unique promise of value (aka personal brand).
Why I do this work was unique. What I did was different, even though "Sue" and I both offered career services.
How I work with clients was different. How could I speak to that? What was the value to my target audience?
What makes you different than others who do what you do?
How do you help clients answer this question about how they are different than their peers?
One of the pivotal experiences for me to really know who I was, how I was different, and why that mattered to my audience was taking the Certified Personal Branding Strategist program William Arruda had started back in 2001.
It gave me a process to uncover my unique promise of value and a structure to help clients do the same.
Now I could communicate how my services were distinct from my peers (with new tools that were different!) and why this difference added value for my clients.
My coaching and writing businesses flourished and I knew I wanted to launch into doing more training. Getting clarity attracted those opportunities!
