A normal newsletter didn't seem to fit today as global protests highlight continued racism and loss of black lives, 1+ billion people globally face unemployment, nearly half a million families mourn lives taken by a pandemic, and small businesses – including many of our colleagues – are struggling.
We see you selflessly serving others despite all of this pain. We see you rallying around to support each other in this difficult work.
It's an honor to have you as part of my community. You give me hope. You give me courage.
Please continue to support each other positively. Encourage each other. Continue to recognize the humanity in each other. Let us know how we can support you (see below for this week's resources).
Career Thought Leaders stands with our black colleagues against racism and will be prioritizing and deepening the conversation around diversity, bias, and how we address those topics in our work.
As career service providers, understanding unconscious bias is a core competency in our field – critical to the success of our work with clients and to the success of each client.
We recognize that failure to understand our individual bias and work on reducing it impedes important conversations with clients of color, and all of those who are disenfranchised, and stops us from demonstrating true empathy and working with them to design optimal career strategies.
We recognize that bias affects our clients of color beyond explicit acts of racism – during the hiring process, as they work toward advancement, as they build a business.
We recognize that we have a role to play in helping clients of all races understand their bias to be more effective leaders, reduce hiring bias, create inclusive company cultures, and dismantle systemic racism.
We recognize and seek to act on the call to support clients and colleagues in a non-judgmental manner to process these events and express their grief and other powerful emotions in their way.
You can see some of the resources to continue learning about bias on our LinkedIn post from Tuesday. We will be continuing to have programs on these topics and welcome your suggestions.
