Up-front clarification: I write resumes for clients as a professional, and I’ve decided I’m uncomfortable including information that is untrue, misleading, etc. I also discourage clients from doing it if I know they’re considering such a problematic course. However, unless I have a reason to know or at least suspect that a client is being dishonest, I have to take his/her word for the truthfulness of the resume contents. All I can do is refrain from including information I know is false. That said, I have some fairly strong opinions about the subject of resume padding, which has been prominent in the news so frequently over the years–very recently, in fact.

If you haven’t noticed the Social Media explosion over the past years, then you must have been living under a rock. Being the social butterfly that we are, Adzuna is already in on the social media d-low, and thought we’d share a few pearls of wisdom with you.
Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook pretty much sit at the epicenter of every aspect of our social lives, professional lives; and now businesses and recruiters are joining the party too. You’ll be lucky to find a single employer not using any form of social media to recruit, so if your not out there, you’re missing out.
80% of job openings are now being filled using

Social media may be the key to our economic recovery. At least that what Marketing Expert Chris Brogan feels in his recent e-book called, “
Using the Social Web to Find work”.
With social media, “there are ways one can connect to like-minded people and perhaps find the job they need to keep themselves afloat in the coming months and year.” he states.

I did a search on Google for
how to organize your job search, and JibberJobber came up on the second page. I thought that was pretty lame, so I figured I’d write a simple post on how to organize your job search.

I recently read a fascinating article that featured true examples of the worst-of-the-worst business letters. Perhaps you have received some of those over the years. Big offenders included letters addressed to the wrong company, recipient names that were spelled incorrectly, erroneous use of a salutation – addressed to ‘sir’ when the contact was a woman – and so forth. It’s enough to make a person cringe.

Avoid these easy but unhelpful ways to let folks know you are in job search mode:
1. Send out a mass email.
2. Only put an update on LinkedIn
3. Tell them you are looking for a job and ask can they help
4. Use a plain vanilla message
5. Close your email without offering to help them in their networking
So, what IS the best way to tell your network you are in the job market?
Ask a Manager blogs about this subject and has some useful things to say.
I would like to add to the suggestions there and advise job seekers to contact each person in your network personally by email or phone with a message that is interesting and that they can act on.

A few months ago, I filmed some new job search and career help videos for
about.com with the help of my good friends at
Geffner Productions. A few of those are newly launched and I’d love to share them with you.
Just in case a topic we covered is on your “need help with that” list.
You can also go watch them on my YouTube channel – that way you can see my
snazzy new intro video.

But no matter where you see them, video can be a great and productive way to learn. And while it’s not a replacement for someone being there with you, at least it gets you and I one step closer to being in the same room. Working on your job search or career strategy.

Numerous news-feeds, blogs, etc., provide information on the latest job market statistics and often include predictions about what’s coming down the road–anywhere from short-term periods to years from now. As a current or future job seeker, you should do your best to stay on top of this kind of information, as an aid to your career management activities. However, if you take everything you read as gospel, you could find yourself thoroughly confused!
Job Market Predictions Not Cast in Concrete
One definition of “prediction” is “forecast.” Basically, that means “to estimate or calculate in advance.” That alone tells you something about the nature of predictions. Even the best job market experts are drawing conclusions about the future based on past and present knowledge available to them...
