CFOs and Corporate Loyalty

A friend of mine (I’ll call him Bob) landed a job after a very proactive, and anxiety-ridden, search, and just completed 5 weeks of very intensive training. As I was congratulating him on completing that training, he told me that his boss in this new company was just fired. Uh oh … the voices in my head became almost audible. As we talked about what his steps might be in executing a solid career management plan, Bob said you know Cindy, “once I start with a company, I am loyal to a fault. I don’t want to be looking for a job; I want to give the company 150%.” It is definitely a character value I hear often from my Finance Chiefs. Well he shouldn’t be “looking for a job.” But he (and you) should … ... Read more

5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Going Back to School For an MBA

I meet some of my clients after they have completed an MBA program. Some of them have previous work experience in totally unrelated fields and assume that the MBA is an automatic ticket to a new job, a management role, and a higher salary. And often they are very disappointed when they realize that the MBA is not the golden ticket they thought it would be. Before returning to school for an MBA, ask yourself these questions. And they may have gained valuable practical work experience while you were spending your time learning the theories behind management in school. Does the MBA support the career you have already started or take you in a totally new direction? If the MBA builds... ... Read more

In fact, I reveled in it and I mentally patted my psyche on the back for several days. What I Didn’t Know Then What I didn’t know then – I could get ahead of my team – far ahead of my team and leave them thinking:

Are You “Penny Wise and Pound Foolish” When it Comes to Your Career?

This maxim really applied to me a few months ago. To save a dollar or two, I bought the cheapest toothbrush in the store – and ended up paying hundreds of dollars after the rough bristles damaged my dental work. Of course, it can be difficult to tell when you’re being frugal and when you’re being “pound foolish.” The area becomes even greyer when it comes to your career. Isn’t the point of a job to MAKE money? Why would you need to spend anything? Consider the following: ... Read more
